BEN&JERRY'S advertisement

From our point of view, this is a very successful, memorable advertisement.
Compared with the Haagen-Dasz's ads in the previous post, this one is way more effective,
because it gives us consumers a lot of information in just 30 seconds.

What's even better? It's FUNNY!!

We believe this ads will be easy for consumers to memorize
since Ben & Jerry's is a brand with a great sense of humor
and always put fun stuff in their advertising :)

A very interesting ads from Haagen-Dazs

This ads might have started off a little boring,
but as has soon as the waiter brings out our good old friend Haagen-Dazs,
 things have gotten more interesting!

Do you like it?
We know we do!

Haagen-Dazs VS. Ben & Jerry’s : Their history

In 1984, Haagen-Dazs wanted to limit distribution of Ben & Jerry’s in Boston,
prompting Ben & Jerry’s to file suit against the parent company, Pillsbury
in its now famous “What’s the Doughboy Afraid Of?” campaign.

In 1987, Häagen-Dazs again tried to enforce exclusive distribution,
and Ben & Jerry’s filed its second lawsuit against the Pillsbury Company.

In 1985, the Ben & Jerry’s Foundation was established at the end of the year
        with a gift from Ben & Jerry's to fund community-oriented projects;
it was then provided with 7.5% of the company’s annual pre-tax profits.

In 1986, Ben & Jerry’s launched its “Cowmobile”, a modified mobile home
used to distribute free scoops of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in a unique,
cross-country “marketing drive”—driven and served by Ben and Jerry themselves.
The “Cowmobile” burned to the ground outside of Cleveland four months later,
but there were no injuries. Ben said it looked like “the world’s largest baked Alaska.”

Who wants a FREE Cone?

Today we're gonna talk about what we think
is one of Ben & Jerry's most successful promotion strategies.
We're pretty sure most of everybody have already heard about it.
Some might even had a chance to participate in the event!
That's right, we're talking about the Free Cone Day!

A Free Cone Day is an annual event held between late March and early May,
in which Ben & Jerry's scoop shops give out free ice cream cups and cones.
The most recent event took place on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 from noon to 8 pm.
The first Free Cone Day was held on Saturday, May 5, 1979 by Ben and Jerry
as a customer and staff appreciation event
for the first anniversary of their store's opening.

Haagen-Dazs

     History

The name HäagenDazs does not derive from any of the North Germanic languages;
it is simply two made-up words meant to look Scandinavian to the American eyes
(despite the fact that the digraphs "äa" and "zs" are not part of any native words in any of the Scandinavian languages.)

This practice is known in the marketing industry as foreign branding.
Mattus thought that Denmark was known for its dairy products and
had a positive image in the U.S. He included an outline map of Denmark on early labels,
as well as the name of Copenhagen.

In 1980, HäagenDazs unsuccessfully sued Frusen Glädjé,
an ice cream maker, whose name without the acute accent is Swedish for "frozen delight"

HäagenDazs was bought by Pillsbury in 1983.
General Mills bought Pillsbury in 2001. However, in the United States and Canada,
Häagen-Dazs products are produced by Nestlé subsidiary Dreyer's,
which acquired the rights as part of the General Mills-Pillsbury deal.
The brand name is still owned by General Mills but is licensed
to Nestlé in the US and Canada.

To offset increasing costs of their ingredients and the delivery of the product,
Häagen-Dazs announced that in January 2009 it would be reducing the size
of their ice cream cartons in the US from 16 US fl oz (470 ml) to 14 US fl oz (410 ml).
Additionally they announced that in March 2009 they would be shrinking
the 32 US fl oz (950 ml) container to 28 US fl oz (830 ml). In response,
Ben & Jerry's said that they would not be changing the sizes of their cartons.

 Ben & Jerry's

History

In 1977,Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield completed a correspondence
course on ice cream making in the Pennsylvania State University`s Creamery.
Then, they made investment to open an ice cream parlor in downtown Burlington.

In 1979,they marked their anniversary by holding the first-ever free cone day.

In 1980, Ben and Jerry rented space in an old spool and bobbin mill on
South Champlain Street in Burlington and began packing their ice cream in pints.

In 1981, the first Ben and Jerry's franchise opened on Route 7 in Shelburne, Vermont.

In 1983, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream was used to build “the world’s largest ice cream sundae” in St. Albans, Vermont; the sundae weighed 27,102 pounds. That same year, the cows
on their cartons were redesigned by local artist, Woody Jackson.

General Info.

Haagen-Dazs, one of the best known ice cream,
is the number one super premium ice cream in the US.
It is first established in 1961 in New York, USA.
Its products include ice cream, ice cream bars, ice cream cakes,
sorbet, and frozen yoghurts.

The brand is relatively expensive compared to its competitors,
but that's exactly the image Haagen-Dazs wants to deliver.
The premium price implies premium quality, because their ice creams
are made with the finest and purest natural ingredients.

Ben and Jerry's is also at the top end of the market, but it is a newer brand,
as it was first made in 1978. Its ice creams cost a little ess than Haagen-Dazs,
but the price is still considered by some as quite expensive
compared to the ingredients used in production
and the much less-premium image the brand gives off.

Instead, Ben and Jerry's has a more fun image,
with unique names for each of its flavor
such as Chunky Monkey, Chubby Hubby and Dublin Mudslide.

The brand's target customer is aimed at younger people than that of Haagen-Dazs.

Although these two brands are both at the top end of the market
and are luxury ice creams, they have very different approaches
to their marketing and promotional strategies.
We'll soon post more detailed comparisons related to
the different marketing mix of Haagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry's.

We promise we'll our best try to make it short and easy to understand
(so you won't get too bored reading the academic terms!) :)

I scream, You scream, We all scream for ICE CREAM!

No one can resist the temptation of
one of the world’s most favorite dessert of all time : ICE-CREAM!!

As we all can tell, ice cream is ubiquitous.
You can find it everywhere, from the smallest cafe in the suburbs
to the big, fancy restaurant in metropolitan areas.
The purpose of consumption varies;

some people might just want to cool down from the heat
during the midday sun, some might want to have it with their chocolate cake,
and some, if not most, just want a scoop for their own guilty pleasure
( Admit it people! :D)

No worries readers, we are definitely not going to
brag about our ice-cream eating habits here.

Instead, to make things more interesting,
we, the four (extra)ordinary girls who worship the delicious scoops,

would like to share some fun facts related to
2 of the most popular brands of all :

Haagen Daz and Ben & Jerry’s.

Oh yes, we know you know them. Everyone does.
They’re both BIG brands, targeting on totally different markets,

yet being VERY successful in each of their own markets.

Come swing by at our blog every once in a while,
we promise you’ll learn something new, fun, and interesting

about the 2 brands every now and then.
For now, you can do yourself a favor, walk to your nearest grocery store,

grab a carton, and indulge yourself with your favorite flavor :)
